New Business Cards

The time has arrived to get some new business cards. My advertising budget is low, so I had a specific amount in mind that I could spend. First I checked to see what I could get by shopping local. Sad to report that the local vendors were way too expensive, so I relied on the internet. Vistaprint was running their ad for 250 Premium cards for $10. I'd be silly to pass that up. I've shopped with them before so when I logged in they gave me some upgrades for returning. Sweet! The deal got even better.

TIP: Do you give your customers an upgrade for returning to your shop? It can simply be an upgrade in shipping, freebie item, coupon for next visit, etc. A little something to show them how much you appreciate their business.

Using my previous cards as a reference, I was looking forward to taking a different approach with the cards. Actually, I should of done this a long time ago.

During my shop makeover I was studying a LOT about branding your business. It was time I included my tagline on them. Simple and to the point. I also used an image in which people can connect to with my online shops.

I removed my address and phone number. Seriously, I was making it to easy for the stalkers. I can easily write the number on the back if the recipient needs it. Instead of listing all of my URL links I only included my blog address. The blog landing page will display tabs of where else I can be found on the web.

Please note: What works for one make not work for another. I am in no way promoting that this is the best way to create your cards. I only offer suggestions from what I experience in hopes that it can help out another business owner. If you have any (suggestions) please add them below in the comment section. Three Sleeping Dogs and The Grammys

As a music enthusiast I look forward to this program every year. The one night that I can and will sit still for 3 1/2 hours straight. Take note because it won't happen again this year, seriously. No computer at my side, only snacks, soda, and my three dogs. Oh, and of course I had the surround sound blasting to get the effect like I was there....almost worked:)

An eclectic mix of musicians who collaborated from all genres of music. Some stepped outside of their box with their performances. And there were those who included the inspiration of fellow artists in their set.

As Dave Grohl stated, "This shows the human element of making music is what's important." "It's about what goes on in your heart and what goes on in your head." "Real music is not about sounding perfect."

Female artists with boy problems turned their misfortune into their best work. Heartwarming tributes to those that the music industry has lost. And then there was Adele.......need I say more?

Oh wait, the three sleeping dogs. My "fur-kids" find music to be very soothing. When there is music on they are out cold in roughly 2 minutes. So, they slept the whole 3 1/2 hours that the show was on. They woke up a couple of times as I clapped loudly or when my phone rang, let out a huge sigh, and then went back to sleep. And now that the show is over, complete mayhem as been fully restored in the house. Three barking dogs fighting over couch space.

Sunday evening well spent!

Care to Make a Bet?

I usually don't gamble, but I'm pretty sure this is one bet I can win.

I bet you that I have more unopened and unused products in my office than you. Care to challenge me?

The shopping budget is tight, so when I get the urge to go to the local craft store I just turn away from the computer pick a drawer, a crate, or a plastic container and browse through everything. It's actually quite fun. By the time I find a whole pile of items that I forgot I purchased (and never used) I've completely forgotten about my first thoughts of leaving the house.

It's Superbowl Sunday

It's Superbowl Sunday. A day football fans wait for allyear. I like to call it Funday Sunday. I don't have to work (my corporatejob that is) so I have time to spend with the "fur-kids".

I don't watchfootball. BUT, I will be tuning in this year for the commercials andhalftime show. I've already seen a couple of them as they were released throughoutthe news coverage. Hilarious!

This is a big change for me as for past years I didn't give athought to watch any of the coverage or the game itself.

The computer will be fully chargedand set up right in front of the tv. Why? Because I find it impossible to do just one thing at a time. I love to multitask.

Snacks? Ofcourse. For myself and the dogs.

Enjoy your day. I will definitely be LMAO at the commercials. As will the dogs.

A Childhood Memory

When my muse is awake she sings like a bird. I'm grateful for that.

Remember the game Memory? I came up with an idea to create my own version using my photography along with adding a little twist to the game. I did an earlier blog post introducing this concept of *memory*. If you missed it, click here to read.

We've all sat on the floor and positioned the game pieces out something like this.

I had a large quantity of photos leftover from a previous project. They were already attached to heavy card stock, so I was looking to recycle them.

One of my nephews received the first handmade memory game for a Christmas present. I used a photo of him hugging his dog. He loved it.

I've created another set (as shown) with items my other nephew can relate to. He always asked about my dogs, so this image will be perfect. His recent phone conversation gave me the inspiration I was looking for.

Sam: "Hi, Aunt Jennifer, the Giants are beating the 49ers (score) to (score)". I completely missed the score as I found myself laughing at his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. He loves to watch football, he's learning the alphabet, etc. Do you get where I'm going?

As I picked through my stamps I found images of what's interesting to him.

I used a variety of ink colors and distressed the sides to match. Perhaps I'll utilize the overwhelming pile of felt I have to sew a bag for them. Or maybe I'll come up with some sort of handmade place mat for them to sit on while playing the game. Oh my, see how one idea can lead to another!

A great educational tool I'm sure they'll both enjoy.

And.....I've decided to add them to my paper goods shop on Etsy.

When I gave my shop a new look, I also upgraded the shop title with new products that will be added.

Lesson learned: Don't mass produce your products when you first start out with your business. Especially if you have a card shop. I am GUILTY of that, but I'm glad that my creative side allows me to utilize those unused products in other ways.

Etsy Business Tip: Reserved Listing Images

We've all heard these sayings at one time or another.

~If it's yours put your name on it.
~If you don't want anyone else to have it, put your name on it.
~You say someone took something that belonged to you? Well, was your name on it?

I'm sure you can agree that although the statements are very common, at times they don't hold much weight. While shopping on Etsy for some supplies, I found what I was looking for, but I needed a smaller quantity of what the seller had listed. I've purchased from this shop before so I asked for a reserved listing of a smaller quantity. She was happy to accommodate my request.

A reserved listing was created with my name on it. She sent me the link and when I clicked on it I saw one simple statement. This item has sold. Are you kidding me? So, as I was the chuckling to myself over the fact that someone else bought my listing a convo came into my inbox. The seller was notifying me that someone else had purchased "MY" reserved listing and she will list another one right away.

Of course the other buyer didn't receive the products. Instead they got an email simply stating they made an error. Overall, the situation created a little extra work for the seller who had to create a new listing, cancel the original one, and email the person who made a mistake. And it put me in a bit of a tizzy (my new word this week).

My muse was wide awake and we came up with an idea. When creating reserved listings use an image other than the product itself. Therefore, other potential buyers won't be able to see what is being held for someone else. And hopefully avoiding temptation to add the item(s) to their cart.

In a recent blog post I shared with you that I was giving all of my online shops a makeover. If you missed it, click here. With my card shop I include all three of my dogs within the branding concept. No one is left out and each of my fur kids play a part in the business (other than looking cute behind the lens).

Hardy has residency in the shop banner. Disco and House work in other areas of the shop. Therefore, we came up with these images.

I upload them when I have to create a reserved listing. Will this tip prevent others from buying reserved listings? Hopefully, but we're only human and we all make mistakes. I like to think and work in a proactive manner. Are you with me?

Proof That My Youngest Son Loves the Camera

A Whole New Look

"We've been very busy here!"

It's amazing what I can get done when I put my mind to it. Or for better words, when I ban myself from the social sites. I surprised myself that I could commit to such a big task. And overall it's created a "mold" for future doings. Like I stated earlier, I'm attacking my goals head on without looking back.

Earlier this week on my Facebook Page I mentioned that I was revamping my blog. Then I decided what the heck, let's update everything. I'm aiming for a fresh approach to the new year.

An so I made the list.

~Update Etsy banners in both shops.

~Update Meylah logo in photography shop.

~New Blog layout and header. Add buttons. New pics of the puppies.

~Create a Welcome Page for Facebook. I confess. Code scares the shit out of me, so this will most likely be outsourced.

~Update content in all shops. I highly recommend that you do this with all your online venues often to make sure it's information is current. I was finding entries that weren't needed and content that I left out.

~Change Twitter Background and Profile Picture.

~Order new business cards.

~Convert Facebook over to the new Timeline. I prefer to do it myself other than Mr. Zuckerberg doing it for me. (Actually, it's not that bad).

~Launch new products.

Crazy list, eh? Actually it wasn't all that bad. I kept one key word in mind when working on it. Branding. I've spent a lot of time reading up on the important role it plays in your business. You want people to know who you are and what you can offer them. Create an identity (your logos) for yourself. I could go on and on, but I think you get what I'm saying.

Conclusion: I'm happy to report that 75% of the above list is complete (audience clapping). A little fine tuning and the welcome page are all I have left to complete. Aren't we always "tuning" the inside details? Then the real fun begins. The launch of new products for my Etsy Paper Goods Shop.

Happy New Year!

A new year is ahead of us. I look at it like I now have 12 brand new months to do anything & everything that I didn't have "time" for this past year. Lots of exciting news will be released within the next couple of weeks with my storefronts.

Resolutions?? Sure I have them. But to tell you them or write them down just isn't realistic for me. Instead I'm going to attack them head on and then share my experiences with you. Will I accomplish them all? Probably not, but that's what New Years are for, right?

In regards to the photo above. It was taken on the one and only day that we had snow here a couple of weeks ago. It lasted a whole day. Today the winds are high, but still no snow. Kind of odd but that's okay with me.

Chocolate Cures Holiday Madness

Really it does~

The countdown has begun. I'm running a marathon in an effort to get everything done in time for Christmas. Are you ready? Lots of projects to finish. Perhaps I should say lots of projects to start. I truly believe I work better under pressure. How about you?

Here's some tips to help you get everything done and relieve the stress. Take breaks in between projects. Have a favorite CD? Crank it! Keep your favorite beverage well stocked. And then there's chocolate. It takes away the stress the holidays bring. A coworker had brought this pan of brownies to a potluck one day and they were so yummy! If I could only remember her name I would give her full credit. Here's what she did.

Prepare a box mix (homemade if you have the time) of brownies. Pour half the batter in the pan. Take a Hershey bar and place across the batter in a row just as in the picture below.

Pour the remaining batter over the candy bars and bake. If you really want to take a trip on the wild side you could frost them. I chose to use powdered sugar. After they cool place about three on your plate to prevent yourself from making several trips to the kitchen. A nice scoop of ice cream on the side would top it off. Repeat if needed if you continue to have signs of stress. Enjoy:)

Handmade Burlap Curtains

House loves to model the new projects

This project has been on my *to-do* for quite some time. I've lived in this house for 5 years and the kitchen needed a fresh look. First on the list was painting. As I was cleaning up that mess I noticed how the entry/exit door looked. I hung a pair of blinds when I first moved in and over time the connectors came loose at the bottom. And I got tired of fixing them. So, every time you opened the door the blinds would go flying. Drove me NUTS! In the garbage they went. The window needed a new look as well.

That's when this idea came to mind. When I purchased the paint I also got a piece of burlap to place on the floor. I never used it. Instead, I made a pair of curtains out of it. It was simple. I held them up to the window, estimated the measurements, and then cut the piece in half to make the two panels. I hemmed a zig-zag stitch using red thread. The burlap is cream and red is the main color in my kitchen, so the two fit well together.

I have a couple of strips leftover after measuring the length of the window. Those will get used for card making using the sewing machine as well. Recycle:)

I was thinking of stamping or stenciling something on them. What do you think? They actually look good as is. Simple is my motto so they just may stay as is. I can always add something later to change the look.

And my youngest son "always" has to be the one in the photo when I take a picture of a completed project. Perhaps he wants the credit. He is silly!

Here is an image of the curtains close up.

You can see that I added an extra hem to the top as well. Defines the stitch and color a bit more.

The burlap cost under $5.00. The time invested was about 30 minutes.

Conclusion: Coming in and out of the door to the house is much more quiet!

One Thing Leads To Another

The Fixx said it back in 1983. And now it's my turn. As I run around my office in an attempt to get everything ready for the holidays I stumbled upon this picture. I'm speaking of the one posted above, cute isn't he? What I actually found was a stack of these photos all the same size and image. I had originally attached them to cardstock for a greeting card but later found that I had so many of that card already. So, what can I create with them? They have been sitting on the "to-do" pile for quite some time. To throw them away just isn't an option.

I looked at them everyday for a couple of weeks. How could I recycle these into something creative? My muse was clearly sitting on my shoulder as I looked at them. I believe she was almost laughing at me. Then it happened. A childhood *memory* flashed before my eyes. Then I found myself laughing as well. The inspiration started to flow like someone tipped over a 10 gallon bucket of water. And it continues to flow. They will make an adorable Christmas gift and then they will find their place in one of my Etsy shops.

Have you ever had one idea which then leads to another and another....? Funny how things work. So, as I was writing this post the group, The Fixx, came in mind. Go ahead and click their link above and enjoy the video.

Oh, as for what I'm creating. You'll just have to wait and see. I did give you a couple of clues. Anyone have a guess?

Hi, my name is House. I'm the cutest dog in the world. Anyway, I've hacked into my mom's blog to show you something. Look at the picture that I loaded. Can you believe this? How could she put such a thing up on the wall for everyone to see. I tried to take them down, but I can't reach them. I looked at the receipt and it actually said ass hooks. Are you kidding me? How embarrassing.

Oh well, I guess I'll allow them to stay due to the fact they hold our walking collars. It still bothers me how when my parents say, "Let's go for a Walk!" that I automatically go to.....the ass hooks!

We are definitely in a time where email and text are the most popular form of communication. But, we all still love to get mail, right? The kind that arrives in an envelope and isn't demanding money. Do you find yourself telling long distance family and friends, "Okay, sure I'll write." And then never do? Perhaps you procrastinate like me. Every intention is there, but still nothing happens.

New Window Display in Galena: Vintage Cameras and My Photography

Can you say...."Super Excited?" Our latest window display at All That's Vintage is a large selection of Vintage cameras, tons of camera accessories, and "MY" Photography. I must say it again....."Super Excited!" We even got a Vintage Fisher Price Storybook camera with the reels. A rare find.

I would have to state that this is my favorite window this year. Do you still have a polaroid around? They have become popular lately. And yes, you can still purchase film for them. Notice the wooden children's parlor table that we utilized for the display. Actually, this was my mom's idea. That's her area of expertise. I'm lucky if I can match an outfit for the day.

Stop in and take a closer look. Notice the B/W Bench photo. I took this over by the Chamber building right here in Galena. It no longer exists. A metal bench sits in it's place.

Come on now. You should of known that the dog would be in there somewhere:)

The "F" Words: Fall and Flip Flops

September 23rd, the first day of a new season. Although I'm not ready for the one that follows which means I'll be pulling out the shovel and salt buckets, I do welcome Fall. We can pull out the sweatshirts, blankets, and crock pots. Don't you just love coming home and the whole house smells awesome:)

We took a ride up to Platteville on Tuesday to check out their Antique shops and thrift stores, wasn't overly excited but I did find a couple of treasures. It's a nice drive up here. You couldn't help but notice the trees changing colors.

Have you ever visited a placed called Uno's? Located on the 151 Business Highway. Being vegetarian I have a hard time finding a good place to eat. I will be making the trip again next Tuesday for dinner. It was awesome!

So, as I attempt to finish up some last minute outdoor projects (in prep for next year) the leaves continue to fall along with the temperatures. Opening day is coming soon for our new Etsy store, Old Time Vintage Finds. My office is overwhelming with unique finds.

The photo above was taken last year on 5th Street in Dubuque, Iowa. Yes, I will pull the car over anywhere to get a shot. My actions has prompted a few middle finger displays from other drivers. I simply smile at them and continue to pull out my camera.

Oh, I almost forgot the other "F" word...... Yeah, even though it's getting a bit cooler outside I can't give up the flip flops, not just yet. Sporting a pair today. Along with a sweater and jacket!

Note to Self: Just Do It!

Do you have a to-do list? Silly question right? Everyone does. Do you copy it over and over again on pretty paper or in those cute little notebooks thinking it'll make you do those things quicker? Never works.

Perhaps you can relate to me when I say that I spend more time organizing my "lists" than actually doing what's on them. As I look them over I find that most of the tasks would only take around 10 minutes or less to complete. But still they sit.

A day doesn't go by that inspiration strikes. And so the list grows. I ponder the idea of changing the name from (To Do) to (Perhaps Someday or Never).

Well, that someday is today! No more bullsh*t. Time is precious and scarce, so why waste it? Feel me?

This is my final attempt to keep this blog alive and to complete all of those tasks that have been lingering around for months. If it doesn't work I'll be shredding everything up and throwing it into the fireplace. Smores anyone?

Sounds kinda harsh, doesn't it? If I'm not hard on myself, who's gonna be? We are our own boss.

Exciting News

Before I begin I must apologize for the current structure of my blog. I'm changing some things around and I'm not quite sure how I want it all to look. So, I ask that you look past that and listen to my announcement.

You could say that it was only a matter of "time" before this happened. Adam (BF) and I have decided to open up an Etsy storefront that will carry vintage items. Yes, another project for us to tackle. But as my "corporate job" continues to make changes due to the stressful economy I also have to make some changes to keep the internet bill paid. Helping my mom in her vintage store has influenced me also.

In my other storefront, Eightymillion, I offer handmade cards. Almost 90% of my inventory there is scanned and then loaded to the shop. With this new store I will get to practice my photography skills in capturing the images for the items we list. I'm completely elated over that!

Naming the storefront. Easy, right? NOT! With the help of my mom and Adam we came up with OldTimeVintageFinds. What do you think of the name? It now exists, but cover your eyes cause the store is completely naked. I can't express how nice it is to have the knowledge I have now behind me when setting up this one.

My office is full of items that we have found on our treasure hunts, so I must go. We are working on the banner and avatar and then the rest will fall into place. Perhaps the old school clock above will play some part in that.

Change-How Much is in Your Pocket?

No, seriously how much? $1.53 here.~

Have you ever had so much change in your bag that it actually felt like you were carrying around a 20lb brick? You constantly shift it from shoulder to shoulder, complaining the whole time. Well, why complain about something you can fix?

Two solutions:
A. Go to the local coin operated laundry mat and do all the laundry. Or...
B. Visit the local ice cream shop and treat everyone to a chocolate dipped cone topped with sprinkles.

My friend Webster tells me that change means to make or become different. To transform. Sounds logical, right? Not always. A lot of people fear change. Perhaps because they feel like it leads them down an unknown path and it takes them out of their comfort zone. We can't always control it when it occurs, but we can control how we react to it.

Weather it's the amount of coins I have in my pocket or my daily routine, things are always changing. These past few months have been a true testament to this. Each day is different from the next. But that's okay. I'm learning to live with it and look at each change with an open mind and opportunity to grow from it.

Yes, I was a NKOTB Fan

You reach a certain age in your life where you can admit all the silly infatuations you had growing up. And this would be the biggest one for me. I struggled with the title of this post. I Was...I Am...Still a Fan....anyway. My first job in high school was at one of the local hospitals. And since I was still living at home I could spend my paychecks on whatever I wanted (oh how I miss those days). So, guess where it ALL went? Yes, on NKOTB memorabilia. Hats, buttons, shirts, VHS videos, posters, magazines, keychains, and so on. I would drag my best friend with me to the Mall every payday. My bedroom walls were covered with photos. I even had one of my senior portraits taken with one of those vinyl wall coverings you can buy. But, I didn't chose that one for wallet size, it was more of a just for fun photo.

My mom took my sister and I to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines where they were performing. I was so excited that I stood in line for over (8) hours to get a good seat up front. It was so hot that day and my stomach would not allow me to eat, so I only drank the soda that my mom kept bringing me. Then the gates opened and I earned a position in the front row. Cool, right? They the world went black! Minutes later I woke up in a seated section right off center of the stage. I had a water bottle in one hand and a cool cloth in the other. Yes, I passed out from the heat. I'm sure my empty stomach didn't help matters. But, I still ended up with a great seat and the show was awesome!

So, this past year when I heard that they were going to be performing on the American Music Awards I became excited again. All the songs went off in my head. That brings me to their tour jacket that I have. I didn't take it with me when I moved out of my parents house, so I asked my mom to find it for me. And she did. I purchased it (with my whole paycheck) out of one of the teeny bopper magazines that I use to buy. I never wore it, just kept it safe hanging in the closet. So, then I did some research online to see if I could find some more. Nothing other than one on Ebay selling for $500. from a vendor in Japan.

Okay, the coat is now 22 years old, so technically it's classified as Vintage. And I decided to put it up for sale in my mom's Vintage Shop. Now, everyone looks at it, touches it, and some try it on to take a picture of themselves. I truly think a guy will purchase it, although several women show interest in it. But when there husbands look it at, they say, "Absolutely Not!" Some laugh and some are in complete aahhh. It doesn't bother me than some laugh, but when someone shows interest in it I want to pull it off the shelf. I've gone back and forth with keeping it or not. And I've delayed this blog post for quite some time also. Perhaps it's my inner voice telling me to keep it. And when I catch myself thinking about it, one of their songs come on the radio. My goodness!

So, at the present time it hangs in my mom's shop and yes it is for sale (for now). But, I only hope that I'm not working when it does sell because I'll probably change my mind again. And I pray that it goes to a good home. My BF is a record junkie (dj) and he found a copy of their Hangin' Tough LP in a pile of his records. So I have that to frame and put on my wall in my office. I often wonder where all of the other memorabilia is. Maybe it went in a garage sale or it's still in my parent's house.

I'm classifying this as my most unusual Vintage item that I have. Do you have anything unusual in your collection? Are you keeping it, or selling it?

Seriously, What Day is it?

What a weekend. Everyone has been sick in my family, so I guess it was my turn. If we were playing UNO, I would of loved to of had the Skip card. Almost 100% better.

Today has been catch up day.

So, as I worked this evening (early morning) in my office I often looked down at my three dogs. They have the life, don't they? So, I captured a shot of them all to share with you. Please excuse Hardy and Disco's eyes for looking a bit freakish, I didn't do much editing there. They have enjoyed their "mommy" home for the past three days. They were troopers. Laid by me the whole time with no complaints.

And what's up with all these television shows? I don't watch much tv, but in between doses of Thera-Flu I would surf around and the majority of the shows were crime related. CSI, Law & Order, Special Victims Unit, ect..ect. And some wonder why we have so many problems in the real world. But I did watch Legends of the Fall like (4) times, so that made up for it.

So, as I prepare my goals for the week I often find myself asking....What Day is it? The dogs don't answer me. Perhaps they are hoping for another "couch day"~ Isn't it something how an illness can alter your routine so much that you actually need to look at the date on your cell phone? And then I usually laugh at myself thinking perhaps this is a sign that I'm going crazy.

No, I Don't Work for Dateline

Good Morning! This is a funny little story that happened over the holiday season. While at my local Target store I walked by this t-shirt that caught my eye. Then I saw that is was a piece from the Shaun White collection. I knew that he was a snowboarder, but couldn't figure out the connection behind this shirt. Anyway, I thought it was cool, so I pulled out my camera and took a picture of it. Can't leave home without the camera, right? Never know where that next photo may come from.

So, as I was putting my camera back in my handbag a sales associate approached me. She was young, perhaps there for the holiday season. She appeared to be nervous when she asked me, "Do you work for Dateline?" I couldn't help but laugh! She stated her reason for asking was because she saw me take the picture of the t-shirt. I explained to her that I was just "taken" by the shirt and the curiosity of it's creator. So, I had to take the picture. She laughed right with me. I could see her nervous behavior quickly diminish.

It may of only been a t-shirt, but the message behind the words was most appealing to me.

The Wheels are in Motion

Goal #1 for 2011 has been accomplished! I found life in my blog. No more bubbles here, I've reached the top of the water and I've got a lot to share with you. For the past month I've been going through several templates, gadgets, font colors, banners, photos, ect, ect, ect.......along with accidentally deleting several of the above mentioned. I finally found one that works for me.

Then I had to find that one special image to officially kick off the "re-birth" of the blog. I was searching for something with meaning. I didn't have anything that "clicked." So I asked my boyfriend what should I use to get this going again. Perhaps a flower? Something to symbolize growth? He agreed, so I consulted my BFF, Google. I simply typed in - show me a flower to represent growth on Handmade Spark. And there it was. The above image is an Art Print by August Wren. As soon as I saw it I knew it was perfect. When I clicked on her Handmade Spark Mini-Site it was so ironic for several reasons. We have the same first name, our fathers use to call us Jenny Wren, and my birthday is in August. I was so excited to email her for permission to use her image that it made me nervous. Her reply was most appreciated. Check out her shop, it's most impressive. She creates out of inspiration from colors, patterns, and textures. I personally "thank you" for helping me in getting the wheel moving!

Another goal for the new year is my new storefront on Meylah. It's there, but it's empty. I've been doing some serious shop maintenance on my Etsy Store that I can only focus on one at a time. I want them both to be unique in themselves.

Merry Christmas

The day is finally here. Not only is the day to spend with family, but a day of rest. Or for me, that means "catch up" day. After visiting with my family I will be working (yes working) in my office getting started on all the goals that I want to accomplish for the upcoming new year. I've got some new writing assignments that I'm working on for Handmade Spark. And I'm preparing for a grand opening of my new storefront on Meylah.com.

You can see from the picture above that House thought it was necessary to be in the photo. Every year we wrap our doors. A bit of red paper, or you can use a tablecloth, some ribbon, and a bow = a bit of holiday cheer. Miniture candy canes look nice also, but with three dogs they may not last. Although, it would make their breath smell a bit better, eh? The possibilities are endless on how you can decorate.

We also wrapped our front door. Funny how the light shines in the center of it.

Well, everyone enjoy their day! The boys woke up to some presents in their stockings. So now we have several new toys laying around the house. More to step around, but they love it!

Only (10) More Days

Can you believe that Thanksgiving is only 10 days away? Where is the month going? Better yet, where has the year gone? The holidays can be a stressful time for many. Take some time for yourself with a break throughout your day to just relax.

As each new year approaches I tell myself that I'm going to start planning early to get a good start. Well, here I am once again, not where I would like to be. What I have found out is that I work best under pressure. Who would of known?

It's Already Dark Outside, BLAH!

Well, daylight savings. It's 515pm and it's dark outside. Yuck! I'm not ready for the approaching season. But, with not being able to work outside due to the cooler weather, I've been working hard on my Etsy shop. And I'm preparing to open another shop on Meylah.com. Do you read her blog? Very helpful tips. Along with my "other baby"--Handmade Spark. The fans are growing and so is the site. Many new things to come.

Are you ready for Christmas? Never am I. But I do plan to make a handful of handmade gifts this year. Will share with a blog post on them, when I get around to making them. Probably around the 15th of December, so no hurry.

Christmas Cards? I've been asked by a couple of family members to please be on the card this year. Every year we always photo our three dogs, well they are the kids in the family. So, I'm cooking up a cute design to have us all on.

Well, I've got a handful of tasks I would like to finish before the day is over. Feels like it already is, because it's DARK outside!

Problem resolved with Header!!!!!

Okay, so I'm trying to get my blog updated and active. And the first thing that I did was change the format around a bit, looks good. BUT, I can't seem to center the header on top. Uuuuggg!!! Has anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? I've attempted Design>Template Design>Advanced>Add CSS> and from there copy/paste codes that I found in various places on the internet. But, it doesn't like me for some reason. Your suggestions would be most helpful! Thanks and have a great night!

Where did the Summer Go???

It's nearly the end of August, WOW!

My Mother's store, All That's Vintage, is going great in Galena. I'm thankful to have another venue to test my products in. Along with my handmade cards, I've added recycled jewelry to my line, using typewriter/cash register keys. She created a blog at Allthatsvintage.blogspot.com
We've designed the new ad for the store to be in the Galenian Magazine. How does it look?

My writing assignments have taken a change. An announcement will be coming very soon. Very excited to share, but I can't just yet..........

I'm going to start doing Giveaways on my fan page of Facebook. Just another way I want to test some of my new products out. If you would like to become a fan (like), please refer to the box to the right to guide you there.

I never sit still, so I'm also in the works for opening another storefront for my products. It will be hosted on the Meylah Website.

A few months ago, I responded to a link a friend had posted on Twitter about a new magazine coming out. The first 500 to respond get a free subscription. I LOVE IT!!! It's called Starlee-Success on Your Terms. It's a magazine created for women entrepreneurs. It has been most helpful to me. I'll be doing another blog post for my review of the magazine. It was pretty cool to see my Twitter comment in their third issue.

Who planted a garden this year? Daily I am picking vegetables from my garden and harvesting them. With the days getting shorter it means that fall is coming. Which is good. A nice comfortable time of the year to work outside or online, I prefer online.

My three dogs continue to grow, inspire, and drive me crazy all at the same time. I wouldn't trade them for anything. Who else can I endlessly share my thoughts and ideas with and they will always agree with me? They are the perfect business partners. I've been experimenting with some new homemade treats for them, we'll see how they go.

The "munchkins"(nieces-nephews) continue to grow by walking, holding their own bottles, and learning how to "talk back"---they too have inspired me with some new projects I've been exploring that are more kid-friendly.

And that brings me to my biggest project this summer which is just winding up. My office, or what use to be called the dumping station. Too much stuff. Too many to-do piles. I basically put myself through an "Extreme Makeover"--and it's working. I can channel my thoughts more clearly now and it's time to get the jobs done. Planning to write an article on my journey through this makeover for Handmade Spark.

Well, that just about sums up my summer.

Disco's Birthday Party

On Wednesday, April 7th we celebrated Disco's 4th Birthday. His theme this year was a Luau. Due to the yucky weather, we had to have it inside.

All three of them sported Leis, House was a bit reluctant about wearing them, but after he was told there were treats involved, he participated.

They each had their own "Dog Friendly" Margaritas.

Disco and House only took a few sips, but Hardy was willing to finish them off for them.

Instead of a cake, we gave them a few of their favorite treats. Sliced apples and bananas. And dog-shaped peanut butter sandwiches.

Except for the little bit of candle wax that I had to peel off of House's nose, the party went well and everyone behaved.

The week ahead....

Another busy week. Working on my photos, listings, and new designs. Friday, we are going to stroll down Main Street in Galena, IL and check out the other stores. Then on Saturday and Sunday we will be moving a majority of the items that will go in my Mother's shop. Very excited for opening day to get here, though it is coming fast. Everyone have a great week!

Just a little conversation

If you live in the midwest, as I do, you had a great day as far as temperatures go. The high today was 40 degrees. Spring is right around the corner. I can hardly wait.

I've been doing a lot of "Spring Cleaning" to my Etsy store. I have discovered the forums and I'm hooked. So many nice people. And if you have a question, you'd be silly not to post it there. With all of the great advise I've gotten, I know find myself re-doing a lot in my shop. Photos, titles, tags, ect... I ask for an honest answer, and I get it.

I've noticed a lot of people commenting on how "Slow" this month is for sales. And yes, I also find that true. So, that makes it a great time to make sure everything is ready to go for when things pick up. Now, if only there was a place where you can get about 8 additional hours in the day, I would be set. Time has always been the biggest struggle for me. While having to work outside of the house, I have great difficulty getting everything done. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Good News!!! My mother has just rented a store in Galena, Illinois. The name will be "All That's Vintage." I will also be able to have a HUGE rack for my greeting cards. Here's a picture of the store.

Well, I should carry along. Lots to do. Everyone have a great day. One more picture that I would like to share. This is what my youngest puppy has discovered while I'm working in my office.

Not really sure if this is a good thing or not. Atleast he's not chewing anything up.

An Interview with Beadworks By Kerri

I would like to introduce everyone to a fellow Etsian, Kerri, from Beadworks By Kerri. She creates a variety of unique jewelry including necklaces, bracelets, and beadweaving. Her shop is full of many to choose from, below is one in particular that caught my eye.

The stone used to create this piece is Variscite, believed to bring hope and courage.

Our interview...

Question: How did you get started designing jewelry?

Answer: It all started over 10 years ago when my older sister taught me how to make a simple pair of earrings. I instantly became a beadaholic, buying beads everywhere I went, taking classes here and there and playing around with different designs. I've been making jewelry ever since. In February 2009 I took the plunge, quit my job and shortly thereafter opened up my Etsy shop. It's been a wonderful adventure.

Question: What is your favorite stone/gem?

Answer: My all time favorite stone is picture jasper. I use it in a lot of my designs. It has such an earthly feel and aura about it and it goes well with almost anything. I love mixing it with Arizona turquoise best.

Question: What does the future hold for Beadworksbykerri?

Answer: I want to continue to grow as an artist, learning new techniques and trying new things. My dream is to make a meager living enjoying what I love and loving what I do. This year I'm going to start teaching classes at a local jewelry/bead shop as well.

Question: Tell us a little bit about your experience on Etsy?

Answer: My experience on Etsy has been both frustrating and wonderful. When I first opened my shop I knew absolutely nothing about photography. Little did I know that photography would play such a key role in the success of my shop. If the pictures aren't clear enough it doesn't matter how pretty or unique the piece is, it just won't sell. As I've learned more, sales have increased. The experience has also been wonderful because there are so many wonderfully talented people with hearts as big as their talent. I've met many great friends and I'm sure will continue to do so.

Question: Is there anything else you'd like to add before we wrap up the interview?

Answer: I'd like to thank all my customers who have allowed me to continue designing and creating jewelry which is my passion. Without you there would be no Beadworks by Kerri. Also, a special "thank you" goes out to Jennifer of Eightymillion for taking the time to interview me.
